The original MPC, the MPC-60, was a collaboration between the Japanese company Akai and the American engineer Roger Linn. Linn had designed the successful LM-1 and LinnDrum, two of the earliest drum machines to use samples (prerecorded sounds). His company Linn Electronics had closed following the failure of the Linn 9000, a drum machine and sampler. According to Linn, his collaboration with Akai “was a good fit because Akai needed a creative designer with ideas and I didn’t want to do sales, marketing, finance or manufacturing, all of which Akai was very good at.

Retailing at $5,000, the MPC60 was a drum machine and sampler that also integrated editing functions. Gone were the switches and small, hard industry-standard buttons of 1980s drum machines and studio mixing boards. Instead, the MPC Drum kits featured 16 large rubber pads that could be pressed and hit to make sounds, as though the machine itself were an instrument with keys. It could be used to compose full tracks. It came with floppy disks preloaded with a variety of sounds and instruments; and unlike many other available products, the pads were pressure-sensitive and could produce different sounds based on how hard they were pressed.

Most importantly it wasn’t an enormous, a stationed mixing panel with as many buttons as a jet fighter cockpit. The MPC didn’t need a studio to be operated, but instead plugged into a sound system in a basement home studio. Its only real match was the E-mu SP1200, which had neither the pads nor the approachability of the MPC drum machine.

In the late 1980s, producers and musicians began turning more and more to drum machines such as the MPC Drums machine in order to create beats and loops without using a full band. More importantly, however, these machines served the needs of a changing musical style where the beats themselves — no longer the thankless work of a drummer sitting at the back of a stage — would begin to work more intimately alongside the vocals, and even shine on their own. At the same time, hip-hop musicians such as Dj Premier, Arrab Muzik, RZA, PETE ROCK and more also began making wider use of sampler machines, which allowed them to take pieces of music from an external source and incorporate it into their own tracks. Machines that combined these two functions (often called groove boxes) were often difficult to use and required a more nuanced technical knowledge in music production. DJ Khaled to Host the MTV Africa Music Awards

DJ Khaled to host for the MTV Africa Music Awards Kampala 2021 (MAMA) on Feb. 20. He is also a nominee for best international act. MTV will air the event globally, in 180 countries, for the first time.

The super producer hip-hop star will host the virtual awards ceremony from his home in Miami, alongside African co-emcees for the event. The show’s home base will be Kampala, the capital and largest city of Uganda.

Hip-hop stars Wyclef Jean and Eve and actors Anthony Anderson and Marlon Wayans are among past hosts of the event, now in its 14th year with DJ Khaled.

The MAMA Kampala 2021 event will celebrate African talent across 20 award categories. Nominees in 16 categories have been announced.

For artist of the year, the nominees are Burna Boy, Calema, Diamond Platnumz, Master KG, Davido, Tiwa Savage and Wizkid.

For best international act, DJ Khaled is competing with The Weeknd, Da Baby, Megan Thee Stallion, Drake and Beyoncé.

MTV Africa and MTV Base announced the return of the continental flagship award show in 2021. The Iconic MTV Base celebration, MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA), which showcases the ultimate in African culture, music, and creativity, will be held in a re-imagined virtual format in partnership with Uganda, The Pearl of Africa on February 20th 2021. The MTV Africa Music Awards Kampala 2021 will be broadcast on MTV Base (DStv Channel 322) and MTV (DStv Channel 130). The repeat show will also be aired on BET Africa, BET International and MTV channels across multiple continents as a one-hour MAMA-themed MTV World Stage feature. This years host DJ Khaled has been on fire the past few years producing for mega super star artists, Justin Beber, Fat Joe, The Migos, Lil Wayne and other stars.

The ultimate celebration of local African and international talent and achievement, MAMA 2021, in partnership with Uganda, The Pearl of Africa, recognizes and rewards musicians, trailblazers and those who are shining a light on the continent’s diverse talent and creativity by instilling positive impact on African music and youth culture over the previous year. The awards ceremony will feature vibrant performances from leading African and international artists and will also showcase some of the biggest cross-genre and cross-border collaborations.

The event will celebrate African talent across 20 award categories, including Best Male, Best Female, Best Song, and Best Collaboration. The contribution of artists from Portuguese and French-speaking Africa will also be recognized in the Best Lusophone and Best Francophone categories. Additional new categories included are the MAMA Generation Change Award, Best Fan Base, Alone Together Best Lock-down Performance and Personality of the Year. These new categories seek to demonstrate MTV Base’s commitment to supporting the youth of Africa.

DJ Khaled and Fat Joe Drops New Single and Video f/ Rihanna-Approved Luther Vandross Mashup
